Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, Iron Javelin Head, Time of Ahab to Uzziah, c. 900 - 700 B.C.
From the collection of Alex G. Malloy, former dealer in antiquities for 40 years.
Ahab was King of Israel, c. 870 - 850 B.C. and the son and successor of Omri (1 Kings 16:29-34). He was married to a Phoenician princess, Jezabel, and his capital of Samaria was said to be wicked, following Canaanite gods and practices. After he was shot by an arrow in battle and mortally wounded dogs licked his blood, according to the prophecy of Elijah. The Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) adds that pigs also licked his blood.
Uzziah was King of Judah, c. 792 - 750 B.C., son and successor of Amaziah. He rebuilt Elath, port on the Gulf of Aqaba. He was stricken with leprosy after entering the sanctuary and offering incense on the golden altar, usurping the duties of high priest. He is referred to as Ozias in the Gospel of Matthew.
